We are a specialist children’s clinic catering to young ones from newborns to 16 years of age. With her years of clinical experience, Dr Wong is a compassionate, patient, and holistic pediatrician, providing thorough assessments and advice.
Young children are frequently exposed to many germs, making it common for them to fall sick as they grow. Whether it's vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cough, sore throat, or painful ears, Dr Wong is here to help your child recover.
Common Colds
Symptoms of the common cold in children include fever, cough, runny or stuffy nose, and sore throat. These viral infections can affect both children and adults. Seek medical attention if your child has a persistent high fever, appears lethargic, has a poor appetite, experiences breathlessness, or has a worsening headache.
Bronchiolitis
Bronchiolitis is a common lung infection in young babies and children, caused by viruses. The small air passages in the lungs become swollen and congested with mucus. Monitor your baby/toddler for high fever, poor feeding, changes in color, and breathlessness. Symptoms may worsen before gradually improving over 1-2 weeks. Seek medical attention if you have any concerns.
Vomiting & Diarrhea
Infections of the gut (gastroenteritis) are common in babies and toddlers, with symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and tummy pains. These can become serious if your child loses too much fluid and becomes dehydrated. Seek medical attention if your child has a high fever, persistent vomiting or loose stools, unusual lethargy, or mucus and blood in the stools.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
UTIs occur when bacteria build up in the bladder or kidneys of babies and children. Symptoms include fever, pain or a burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, abdominal or back pain, or poor weight gain in infants. Your child’s urine will be tested and you will be advised on the required treatment.
Other common infections include pneumonia, herpangina, and hand, foot, and mouth disease.
Babies and children may also experience non-infectious conditions such as:
Eczema
Also known as Atopic Dermatitis or ‘sensitive skin,’ eczema causes itchy, dry skin. Moisturizers, anti-itch medications, and loose, cotton clothing can help. Depending on the severity, the doctor may prescribe steroid creams. Seek medical attention if the itch interferes with daily activities or sleep, or if there is crusting, broken, and weepy skin.
Colic
Common in babies less than 4 months old, colic is characterized by crying spells lasting more than 3 hours a day (especially in the evenings), for more than 3 days a week, for 3 weeks. In most cases, no specific treatment is required, and the crying resolves by itself by 4-6 months old. Techniques to calm and soothe the baby can be tried. Seek medical attention if you are worried.
Constipation
If your child often strains to pass stools or does not poop as often as expected, they may have constipation. This can cause abdominal discomfort, fussiness, and cracks at the anus, leading to blood in the stools. Babies and children can have varying bowel movements at different ages. Seek medical attention if stooling is a persistent concern.
Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds can be frightening but usually cause no harm. Bleeding typically occurs from the thin blood vessels in the middle part of the nose (septum). Nosebleeds may happen more frequently in children who sleep in air-conditioned environments and in those with ‘sensitive noses’ (allergic rhinitis).
Vaccines protect your child from infectious diseases by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies, enabling them to fight the disease if exposed in the future. It is crucial to shield your child from serious infectious diseases, which can sometimes lead to severe complications or be life-threatening. However, not all infectious diseases have vaccines available (e.g., hand, foot, and mouth disease). Optional vaccines include those for Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, Influenza, and Chickenpox. It may still be important for your child to receive these; seek medical attention if you have any doubts.
Developmental assessments are carried out at different stages of your child's growth to ensure they are meeting key milestones in areas such as playing, learning, speaking, behavior, and movement. The main areas assessed include gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech and language development, and social-emotional development. Parents, grandparents, and other caregivers are encouraged to actively participate in monitoring the child's progress. Seek medical attention if you notice your child is not achieving certain milestones.
It's recommended to start looking for a pediatrician early in your pregnancy to prepare for your baby’s arrival.
Newborn Screening
Newborns are typically examined by a pediatrician within the first 24 hours after birth while in the hospital. The following checks will be done:
Measuring your baby’s weight, length, and head circumference
A thorough physical examination from head to toe (including eyes, neck, heart, breathing, reflexes, spine, and hips)
Blood tests for jaundice and sugar levels (in some babies)
You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have, especially if you are a new parent with concerns about baby care and feeding.
Well-Baby Checks
After your baby is discharged home, scheduled well-baby checks are crucial. These appointments allow your pediatrician to regularly monitor your baby’s growth and development, feeding, jaundice (especially in the first few weeks of life), and sleeping habits. Dr. Wong will address any questions you have and provide relevant information based on your baby’s age, covering topics like feeding and sleep patterns. Well-baby visits are an opportunity to discuss any concerns, as parents are usually the first to notice changes in their baby’s behavior or growth.
