Getting a baby to sleep through the night can feel like the ultimate goal for new parents. However, instilling good sleep habits early on can help babies learn to sleep independently. Dr Petrina Wong, a paediatric consultant at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), suggests that parents can start teaching babies to differentiate between night and day as early as two to four weeks old.
She advises, “When your baby wakes up and cries at night, wait a few minutes before responding. This approach can prevent the baby from waking up more frequently if caregivers react to every small noise or movement during the night.”
